It is in nature that I find my greatest lessons.
Mariela Restrepo was born in Cúcuta, Colombia. She currently lives in Puerto Rico. She studied painting at the University of Puerto Rico and at La Liga de Arte in San Juan, Puerto Rico; marble sculpture at the University of Turabo in Caguas, Puerto Rico; stained glass at the University of the Sacred Heart in Puerto Rico; and painting at the School of Art and Design in Altos de Chavón (affiliated with the Parsons School of Design in New York), Dominican Republic.
She has always preferred to explore different artistic disciplines freely, without influences that might distort her perception and execution. It is in nature that she finds her greatest lessons, as nature is her everlasting teacher.
"I tend to paint only what conveys a feeling of love, peace, or reflection to me. I believe that the artist has a mission to fulfill through their work. I feel that mine is to honor NATURE. When I observe a mangrove with its intertwined roots reaching into the water and another gazing toward the sky, stripped of its greenery, it saddens me. It awakens my ecological consciousness and the desire to protect it. The plea for us to protect them remains latent."

She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1979, presented at: the Ateneo Puertorriqueño; the Carnegie Library; the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture; the Museum of Art and History in Ponce; the Conde de Mirasol Museum in Vieques; the Museum of the Americas at the Ballajá Barracks (Celebrating 25 Years in Art); and the Francisco Oller Museum in Puerto Rico.
Voluntariado de las Casas Reales, Casa Bastidas, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. 2nd Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Printmaking, Barranquilla, Colombia. 5th International Salon of Independent Contemporary Artists, Barcelona, Spain.
Latin American Museum of Art, Ralb & Co., "Las Mona Lisas"; Museum of the Americas, "Women in the Arts 2008," Miami, United States. Salon d'Automne International des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, Canada (Gold Award). Rome Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea, Ippolito Caffi, Museo Centrale del Risorgimento. Vittoriano, Rome, Italy (Highest Quality Award). International Exposition, Chania, Crete, Greece. International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Florence, Italy.
Art Expo, New York. "Leonardo da Vinci Award," Fyr Contemporary Art, Florence, Italy. CARROUSEL DU LOUVRE, GRAND LOUVRE COMPLEX, PARIS, FRANCE. She exhibited at the Puerto Rico Pavilion during the Pan American Games in Indianapolis, United States. World Chamber of Commerce Convention, Australia, and at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Five reproductions of her works were included among the gifts that all delegations from participating countries received from Puerto Rico.
Among the collectors who own her work is the well-known Apollo Program astronaut Fred Haise, Commander of the Apollo 13 Lunar Module.
Her works can be found at: the Mirabal Sisters Museum, the Royal Houses Volunteer Museum, Casa Bastidas in the Dominican Republic, and the Latin American Museum of Art in the United States.

A Pale Blue Dot
That is where I exist. My entire world is concentrated in that tiny blue dot—who I am and everything that defines me as a human being. It captures my emotions, envelops me in the web of love, in the roles that fate has placed in my path, and teaches me, through its wisdom, to find my place in my cosmic reality.
